Dry out old paint cans for disposal with used cat litter
I have so many partially filled paint cans after painting the majority of my home. I save a quart of paint in each color in a mason jar for easier storage for future touch ups. I tried finding a place that will take the leftover paint but no one wants it because it should be treated as hazardous waste. My rural community does not have, or I have yet to find, hazardous waste collection. Hardware stores tried to sell me a powder product that will solidify wet paint so you can dispose of it with normal trash. I learned you can do the same thing with cat litter.
So now every time I completely deep clean/scrub out a litter box I use the old litter to dry out one or two of our paint cans. I’d throw out this litter anyway so it’s a good way to get one last use out of something and avoid buying a dedicated product.
I hope this tip helps someone declutter their home of those stacks of paint cans that you don’t know what to do with! Does anyone else have alternate uses for cat litter?
