Can I turn off my heater if it doesn't go below freezing?

Where I live, most days the low temperature is in the forties or high thirties. I know to keep the heater on low if it freezes to avoid burst pipes, but is there any reason not to switch off the thermostat entirely overnight or when I leave the house as long as the outside temperature is above 32?
