Is finding employment in your 50s as hard as some guys say, or is this about outdated skills?
I’m not near my 50s yet, but every once in a while I hear or read a comment about people having a hard time finding new employment once they are passed 50. This article in particular peaked my interest.
But is this about age, or is it skill?
I work in the tech industry, I am constantly taking classes, new certifications, learning new technologies, I also teach tech courses for free as a hobby, I like learning new things all the time, and at the same time it’s made me very marketable as a consultant, but many of the people I work with prefer to learn one technology and stick with it for a long time until they have no choice but to learn something new to stayed employed.
I work with people in their 50’s and 60’s who are some if the smartest people I know, but also know people who are a lot younger who just don’t care for learning something new and marketable, the skill set in tech has nothing to do with age.
I have not been impacted by age discrimination, but is this something that is common for someone who keeps their skill set up to date?
