Is anyone else’s rent a large portion of your monthly expenses?

We live in an expensive area and are weighing renting a home that would be just under 1/3 the cost of our monthly income. We need more space due to a new baby, and are already looking into the farthest commute area that’s feasible—and it’s still that expensive.

Does anyone else do this? Is this feasible or a horrible idea? What other expenses did you cut back on or save on to do this? Any advice (either how to swing it or advising against it totally) would be appreciated.

PS our biggest expense right now is food- we do a lot of takeout and delivery, being exhausted with the new baby.
