Spending thousands to ultimately save me a lot more
So I'm currently spending thousands on my house, in order to decarbonise it
Solar panels and batteries cost a fair chunk
Triple glazed windows cost a fair chunk of cash
Insulation is also something that costs money
The current average prices for electricity is 35p/kWh and the current average price for gas is around 10.5p/kWh. The current standing charge is 42p/day for electricity and 27p/day for gas
Though I've noticed, with a fairly small solar panel array and a battery, my bill between April 7th to May 6th is just £65
For reference, my bills should be closer to £260, so that's a huge saving. I'll be saving even more when I get a bigger array (6.4kw in total) and triple the battery size (9 kWh)
I've worked out that :
I'd be generating circa 5000 kWh a year. I require around 3200 kWh a year
With a specific tariff, I can import electricity between 2am and 5am for 19.63p/kWh. Between regular hours I'd get 21.72p/kWh for exporting. Between 4pm and 7pm that figure rises to around 33p/kWh but I'm not considering that. Some people forcibly discharge their batteries but that adds more cycles imo
I also require around 13,500 kWh of gas which currently costs me just 4.4p/kWh vs everyone else's 10p/kWh
The standing charge for electricity is 49.77p/day. The standing charge for gas is 26.84p/day
So, realistically I'd be: Importing 3200 kWh of energy at £628.16. The standing charge costs £181.66
I'd then export 5000 kWh of energy at £1086. So a total "profit" of £276.18
Then I'd buy in 13500 kWh of gas for £594/year + a standing charge of £97.97 (£691.97)
£691.97 - £276.18 = £415.79 or around £35/month for both electricity and gas which is insanely cheap when my bills should be closer to £260/month for both
Realistically, my energy consumption from gas will actually go down as I decarbonise. That, and I've got ripple energy shares so importing 3200 kWh means at least another £160 off my bills for the year
The end goal isn't to spend thousands to save a few quid though. The end goal is to completely decarbonise and then to shift my heating to a heat pump as well as get an EV, hence the big array
Though in the interim, it's a nice little side effect. The solar panels should pay for themselves fairly quickly in the UK given current prices
