Parent’s Furniture— do I pay for a storage unit?
Hi thrifty folks,
I (22 f) live with my parents and am saving for my own place. My parents just remodeled their kitchen and living room. The result— a storage unit full of furniture they’re not moving into the new remodel. My parents kindly offered to save the furniture for me, if I pay the monthly cost of a storage unit. The storage unit items include a couch, a sturdy wood kitchen table with chairs, a coffee table, large mirrors/artwork, and more dishware than I know what to do with! Beautiful glasses, mugs, plate sets, cutlery, serving platters, pots and pans, decor, etc. I can’t say the value of the unit, but I’d guess around $4-$5k.
The storage unit costs $280 per month. I currently don’t have a place and plan to move in 2-3 years. Saving for a down payment on a home. One option I’m considering could be to move some of it to a smaller unit for $150/mo.
I am inclined to keep the stuff. It seems wasteful to garage-sale and donate perfectly fine furniture, just for me to purchase the same things again in a few years, to get lesser quality items. Not to mention the hassle and decision-making that comes with designing a new home from scratch.
Is it a good idea to save the stuff for later and pay for a storage unit? Or do I help my parents sell it and repurchase the furniture later? Advice appreciated. 🙏🏼
