Seeking information on applicant selection: does your country of residence factor into this process?

Hello!

In my search for online work, I've wondered something: when one applies for a remote role, are they more likely to be hired if their country of residence is the same as the company/ organisation?

I'm located in New Zealand, and I am wondering if my country of residence will disadvantage me when applying for roles with companies in the United States. And, if this will disadvantage me, does anybody know if I can do anything to offset this disadvantage?

For example, in NZ, it is regarded as rude or arrogant to exhibit high confidence when applying for a role, and you will be less likely to be interviewed. Humility seems to be the way to convince recruiters here. Do recruiters in the U.S. emulate the same preference?
