My husband & I struggle with impulsive spending, in part due to our mental health conditions. Advice on being frugal?
My husband has ADHD, I have bipolar 1. We are both impulsive spenders. Both conditions cause impulsivity. With impulsive spending being our biggest challenge. (Though there’s also impulsive eating, and other impulses to attend to as well).
We make a budget every month. And yet it still somehow always goes out the window.
I’m thankful our bills are always paid. I’m thankful we manage to save for retirement (currently saving 10% each not including employer match).
Are there any recovering spendthrifts here who have had to overcome mental health issues?
We both desire to be frugal. It’s especially important to us now that we have a child in our home. I want to teach our son to be responsible with money. It is, at present, difficult to do when we aren’t as responsible with ours as I’d like to be. Thankfully he’s 5 weeks old. So we have time.
I’m choosing to post here rather than personal finance. My grandfather told me growing up that the key to financial success is live below your means and be frugal with money.
I grew up in poverty. Husband grew up in a middle class family who lives above their means.
I’m certain habits are also at play…
