How do you make your own laundry detergent?

Have heard of a couple different combinations, some including borax. Is borax the ticket?

Consumer reports says not to use vinegar due to risk of the acid melting the machine’s rubber hoses, and mentioned it doesn’t do much for set stains anyway.
