What Are My Options for Jobs With a Healthy Work-Life Balance? (Details on my skillset inside)

No comments :

Hi all,

I'm working an exhausting job (as a newswriter) which is draining the life out of me. Recently spent my 30th birthday working a 9-hour shift... and decided afterwards to ramp up the job-hunt.

I don't know which jobs I have a decent chance at getting, so I'm looking for guidance based on what I have going for and against myself:

For:

  1. I'm a strong comedy-writer: I've written humorous pieces featured at a few publications, and was building a following on Medium at a good pace before I had to stop because of my job.
  2. I'm a strong editor: Currently, I'm a newswriter at a Fortune 500 company, where most of my work receives zero or minimal editing before it's published, and where I frequently improve the copy of already-published work.
  3. My English is solid: Back in the day, I landed in the 99th percentile in Elance's U.S. Basic English test. Recently, I attempted a Fiverr English test and scored a perfect 40/40, landing in the 90th percentile.
  4. $20/hr is enough: I live in a low-cost region, so even receiving $20/hr will let me live comfortably while working either part-time or full-time.

Against:

  1. Niche skills: I feel comedy-related and creative jobs are uncommon and usually don't respect a healthy work-life balance.
  2. Lack of formal editorial qualifications: Outside of offering free samples of my work, I have few ways of showing my skill as an editor. Luckily, I'm in charge of a feature piece which includes editing other writers' work. So, I have some professional experience in editing to point to, but editing is not listed in my role's formal job description.
  3. Irrelevant scores: I think Elance/Fiverr/Other test scores are too questionable to include on a resume, so I only mention them in informal settings.
  4. I'm South-Asian: I know clients are often skeptical of dealing with writers and editors from my region.
  5. Limited payment options: Clients can only pay me through a wire transfer, Upwork, or Fiverr, since PayPal isn't available in my area.

I went through some rough personal stuff over the past few years and never got the space to recover from it. I'd like to pick up something less stressful and time-consuming than my current work so I can heal and rebuild my life instead of continuing to pour my life into an exhausting job that I'm unhappy with.

Based on what I have going for and against me, what remote work do you think I'm suitable for, and which platforms would you suggest I look into?
