My wife has an old Sony VAIO (at LEAST 10 years old and probably more), somehow we got Windows 10 on it and it was ridiculously slow. I decided to install Ubuntu (free Linux operating system for those who don't know) on it and it's pretty good now.

Let me preface this by saying I have no experience with any OS other than Windows and have never used a Linux system before. I went to the Ubuntu website and read their installation instructions, downloaded the OS onto a bootable thumbdrive and installed it. It was smooth and painless, and then I installed a bunch of free software and that was easy as well.

She's very happy with how it turned out, she can surf the web, check emails, and do word processing, which is really all she wanted to do, and we didn't have to buy a new computer.
