Buy Nothing Group, for neighborhoods in Atlanta, Georgia!

No comments :

Hey ya'll,

My name is Marisa and I am local volunteer for the Buy Nothing Project, a global movement to create hyper-local gift economies in neighborhoods all over the world. I am the admin for a few neighborhoods in Atlanta, Georgia, including Old Fourth Ward, Inman Park & Virginia Highlands.

What's it all about? Well, think of the old fashioned "borrow a cup of sugar from your neighbor" philosophy. These neighborhood groups strengthen bonds between neighbors by sharing resources, and in the process help our environment by reducing driving, reducing consumerism, cutting down on plastic packaging and shipping, as well as diverting items from landfills and into homes where they are wanted.

We are not about "stuff". We are about people and their stories. The "stuff" is merely the connection to real life neighbors.

Here are some beautiful things that have happened as part of the Buy Nothing Project worldwide:

  • neighbors got together at a community spot to split plants and share the bounties of their gardens
  • a neighbor broke her leg, and the neighborhood came together to take turns walking her dog
  • the beloved piano belonging to an elderly couple who were getting ready to downsize was gifted to a young girl who is practicing to become a concert pianist
  • neighbors furnished an entire house for a family whose house had burned down
  • cooking clubs, sewing lessons and other "gifts of self" have been offered

  • material gifts ranging from farm fresh eggs, furniture, clothes, jewelry, leftover dinner, wedding dresses, paper towels, toys, shoes, blankets, frames, laundry detergent, and anything you can name have been gifted.

These groups are meant to strengthen the social fabric of our neighborhoods through random acts of kindness.

Please answer the three membership questions. Happy gifting!
