Heat pump help. Auckland New Zealand

My wife just had a baby and is home all day now, is it cheaper for me to leave the heat pump I have now, on all day or keep turning it off and on. When it is on and gets to temperature it seems to just turn on to get back up to temperature. Is this the best way to use it? Only on one income now so any help is great thanks :)
