How to lessen my electricity bill
I'm a chronic lurker on reddit but found this subreddit and am inclined to be more active here because this is my people
Anyway
I (23F) moved into a 2 bed apparement with my (23M) boyfriend (BF) last October and its been fantastic. Were learning lot about ourselves and adulting and such but can always learn more. To the point:
Most utilities are included in the rent with exception of internet and electricity. On average were spending around $130 a month on electricity. Compared to neighbors were using 123% (992kWh) more electricity than our neighbors (445kWh).
Suffice to say, the electricity has been a big issue. We're usually good about turning off lights, although BFs computer has a tendency to run its internal fans and LEDs lights All. Night. Long.
I think the main culprit however would be the AC unit in our main bedroom. Its a wall unit that pulls air from outside and blasts it into the interior. BF has it set to a crisp 65 degrees all day and night every day without fail. Apparently hes part polar bear because he can't handle the heat. He might actually melt if the temperature is above 70.
Even through the winter this was the case because our apartment is always so toasty. Our apartment boarders the boiler room for two walls so even in winter we would sweat without turning on the heat. I have tried to convince him to let me turn off the AC while we're at work for 9 hours a day but when we get home you would have thought we were hiking on the sun the way he complains.
I have it currently set to eco mode so its shuts off when it achieve goal temp and kicks on when thats not long the case but it almost never achieves goal temp.
I purchased this 6-15 p outlet timer typically used in gardening so i can program when the AC kicks on and Off. But my dudes, its my last idea for cutting back on our needless AC usage. It arrives here this weekend so finger crossed.
We're 1st floor, somewhat sketchy side of chicago and are hesitent to open our windows for external air because the building has had a few incidences in the past.
Our window shades are always drawn shut. Laundry is shared for all 12 units so we dont pay for that. No dishwasher. Only other thing thats a drain on electricity is the kitchen fridge and I can't really unplug that, but its a dinosaur and doesnt seal properly.
My goal is to achieve a bill less than $100
So I ask: what else can I do?
Either to lessen the AC usage, cool the house, or save on electricity some other way I'm unaware of.
