saving on major car repair??

Honda dealer told us that our 2011 Honda CR-V with 39,000 miles needs to have the rack and pinion steering replaced due to leaking seals. For parts and labor including alignment and flush, they want just under $2000K. I checked with a private mechanic and his bid was not much less but he also said it needs to be done. Is there any way to get this repair for less?
