$20 an Hour Teaching English With VIPKid
My wife and I both work full time online. We make money from our own websites, as well as from freelance and side hustle gigs. The following is our review and experience teaching English with VIPKid.
VIPKid is by far the easiest/most accessible way to make consistent, decent money online that I have ever found, with two caveats. First, you have to have a bachelor's degree, but it does not matter what field it is in. Second, you must be eligible to work in the US or Canada. Honestly, I am not sure if this is about the accents they want, or if it has more to do with legalities, as the company has indicated that it might be opened to more countries in the future.
You are also required to have "two years of teaching experience, or the equivalent of it." This one is pretty flexible though. Everything from helping kids you babysat with their homework to helping out classmates can be counted, just so long as you have the required two years of teaching or tutoring experience.
Assuming you check those boxes, the pay is ~$20 per hour. It is extremely flexible, with sessions being a half hour each, and there is no minimum nor maximum number of sessions that you are required/allowed to teach per month.
Also, all lessons are prepared in advance, and you will be told what lesson each student is signed up for, so the prep work on your part is minimal. You just open sessions when you want to teach, and if they get filled, review the lesson, then teach it. I have heard some people complain that they struggled to get sessions consistently, but my wife (who opens far more time than I do for lessons) has not had much of a problem teaching five or more lessons per day since signing up.
All of that said, the big con with the company is that they operate on Beijing time, which means that prime hours are ~4-10am, depending on what time zone you are in. On the weekends and during the summer, however, there are evening class times as well, so that allows for a bit more flexibility for nonearly risers.
Because you are teaching children, the hiring and vetting process is a bit more in-depth than other side hustle sites. There is an application, an interview, and a mock lesson. These can be a bit intimidating, but we actually have a full guide and video series to walk you through each step of the process. If you sign up using our link, just shoot us an email to logan@unworktotravel.com from the email address that you sign up with and we can share all of the resources with you! They are actually freely available online to everyone, but the sub rules do not allow me to link directly to them.
Below is a standard link, as well as our referral link. And feel free to ask if you have any further questions!
