Can I use brown shoe polish on black shoes to make them look brown?

I'm a groomsman at my friend's wedding. He's asked us to wear dark brown leather shoes, but I only have black. I'm wondering if I'm able to just polish my black shoes brown, and when the event's over I can polish them back to black?
