Too many devices on my network - would an access point help?

I think I've hit my limit with how many phones my network can handle. Sometimes devices are unable to connect to the Wi-Fi (including my computer). Some of the phones give me an authentication error when attempting to connect to Wi-Fi.

Would setting up a second router as an access point allow me to connect more devices without error, or is this a limitation of my modem/network?
