Lending Money Safely on /r/borrow

Hey everyone, I didn't know what sub to post this on so I decided to just do it here because you guys might know something about it.

Anyway, there is a subreddit called /r/borrow where you can lend or request money, usually to be repaid in a short time along with a little bit extra. I really want to start lending money on here but in order to participate you need 1000 karma, and although I spend a lot of time on here, I am a bit of a lurker. I am trying to get karma by commenting on AskReddit but that will take me a long while, so I was thinking about loaning them money outside of the /r/borrow system. How could I go about doing this safely? Is it even possible? What conditions need to be met for paypal to give me a chargeback? I would really appreciate any advice you guys can give me!
