Dangers of online jobs and how to manage them

I've recently started the probationary period (30 days) of an online job. I'd like to verify the mother company of the website I manage is legit before turning over any of my own sensitive data.(Bank account for direct deposit, Social Security for Tax purposes, etc) I've done a bit of research and the site has been around for years however, broken links on he mother site and outdated information make me think I'm better safe then sorry. I'm positive I don't have to reinvent the wheel. How can I verify the authenticity of my new employer and protect myself?
